Having garlic on hand is a great way to add flavor to your dishes without adding a ton of extra calories. Here are a few simple tips for successfully growing your own batch of garlic at home:
Plant at the right time:If you choose t plant your garlic outside, aim to get your garlic planted in the fall, according to The Almanac. You’ll have to wait until the following summer to harvest your crop, but the bulbs will be bigger and tastier.
For best results: Purchase garlic cloves from a gardening store, not the grocery store. The type you purchase at the store may not be suitable for your particular climate. The only way to grow garlic bulbs is to plant them outside so they get the proper nutrients and dormancy necessary, according to Martha Stewart.
You’ll need to water and tend your garlic most of the year, but you should be able to harvest your crop in July.
Plant indoors: Break cloves from the bunch. Leave the peel on the cloves and plant them in a four-inch pot. Fill the pot with soil, leaving about 1/2 inch at the top. Press your garlic bulbs and inch into the soil, pointy end up. You can plant garlic cloves close together and you can fit up to 12 cloves in a 4-inch pot. Water regularly. Note: This method produces garlic greens (chives), according to Organic Life.
Ideally, once your greens stop growing you can dig up the clove you buried and you’ll have a small bulb. You can remove a clove and replant it to get more greens, Living Traditionally reports.
Other planters:If you don’t have a pot on hand, try using a large yogurt or butter container with drainage holes poked in the bottom.
